Our history began in the 1970s when Sister Dolores Girault, D.C., who was a retired Registered Nurse and Pharmacist, identified health problems in the west side of San Antonio, where children were dying from a diphtheria epidemic due to lack of access to medical treatment. Sister Dolores solicited the concern and support from the local Catholic Archdiocese and the US Department of Health, Education and Welfare (now Department of Health and Human Services) for funding to operate a two exam rooms pediatric clinic in the back of a west side church to care for the children.
Today, CommuniCare Health Centers is a full service primary healthcare system serving in Bexar, Kendall and Hays counties.
